Originally established in Bear Lake, MN in 1955 by Vernon Schmidt and his son Tom as Midwest Excavating Company Inc., the business changed its name to T.A. Schmidt and Sons Excavating, Inc. once it was acquired by Tom and his several sons in 1979.

The business is currently owned and operated by Tom's son Mark Schmidt, who has helped it to grow into the most trusted excavation contracting business in Chisago, MN.
